Why Gymnastics?

What is Physical Literacy?

Physical literacy refers to the ability and confidence to move effectively and enjoyably in a variety of physical activities throughout life, encompassing skills, knowledge, and attitudes related to physical activity and sport.

Why is Physical Literacy important?

Physical literacy is important for children as it helps develop their fundamental movement skills, such as running, jumping, throwing, and balancing, which form the foundation for more complex physical activities. It also enhances overall health and well-being, fosters a lifelong love for physical activity, and enables children to engage in various sports and recreational activities with confidence and competence.

It is comprised of four domains (Physical skills, Phycological, Social skills and Cognitive skills). These four domains are made up of key elements that contribute towards the overall development of physical literacy.

Psychological: Gymnastics requires discipline, self-control, and perseverance, which can help children develop strong work ethics, determination, and mental toughness whilst achieving new skills promotes confidence and motivation through achievement.

Social skills: Gymnastics involves group activities, teamwork, and communication, which can enhance children’s social skills, self-esteem, and confidence.

Cognitive skills: Gymnastics requires concentration, quick decision-making, making evaluations around risk and safety, and mental focus, which can improve children’s cognitive skills like attention, physical awareness, and problem-solving.

Gymnastics is a fun and engaging physical activity for children, which can help them develop a lifelong passion for fitness and sports. Developing physical literacy through gymnastics has been shown to improve academic performance, social skills, and overall quality of life.
